Max had been with me for three years. He was 12 when he came to me, now he’s 15. I thought we would continue like this—a quiet pair living peaceful days. But fate had other plans.
Luna’s Arrival
It was an ordinary Tuesday when I received an email from an animal shelter. There was a photo of a dog in the email—an 11-year-old Golden Retriever named Luna. The message was short and urgent:
“Luna’s owner passed away last week, and her family can’t care for her. She has severe arthritis and needs daily medication. We’ve been trying to find an adoptive home for her for three weeks now. No one wants to adopt an ‘old and sick’ dog.”
I replied to the email: “I’m willing to try.”
First Meeting
The day I brought Luna home, I was most worried about Max’s reaction. At 15, Max was used to having all my attention and all the resources in the house to himself. How would he react to a strange dog suddenly appearing?
When I brought Luna home, Max was lying on his dog bed in the living room, soaking up the sun. He saw us, slowly stood up, and tilted his head at Luna.
Luna’s reaction surprised me—she showed no fear or aggression. She slowly walked up to Max, lowered her head, and gently sniffed his paw. Then she took a step back, lay down on the ground with her back to Max—a posture indicating “I’m no threat.”
Max looked at Luna for a while, then walked to his water bowl, took a drink, and slowly returned to his bed and lay down. That was their first meeting—no growling, no fighting, just a tacit understanding between two old souls.
The Moment of Farewell
The day Max passed away, Luna stayed by his side the whole time. The vet administered the euthanasia injection. Max’s eyes slowly closed, his breathing gradually stopped. Luna sat quietly beside him, watching everything. After Max stopped breathing, Luna walked over to him, sniffed him, then let out a low whimper.
That was the first time I saw one dog mourn another.
