This is a lesson every pet owner eventually faces—how to say goodbye well. My dog Charlie is 16 this year and has reached the end of his life. This article was written during the last days I spent with Charlie.
Knowing When to Let Go
The hardest question: When is it time to say goodbye? Quality of life indicators: appetite, mobility, pain, happiness, dignity. When the total score is below 35 (out of 70), it may be time to consider letting go.
Hospice Care Options
Home hospice care: Pet in familiar surroundings, family can accompany 24/7. Hospital hospice care: Professional medical care, can monitor condition at any time.
Making the Final Days Comfortable
- Pain management: Give pain medication on schedule
- Comfortable environment: Soft dog bed, keep warm, reduce noise
- Food and water: Provide their favorite food
- Hygiene care: Regular cleaning, wipe with warm water
Emotional Farewell
Tell them you love them, thank them for their companionship throughout their life, give them “permission to go,” create final memories.
