Twin Senior Dogs – The Reluctance of Saying Goodbye Together

This story is about twins—two 13-year-old Dachshunds, Coco and Loco. They were born together, grew up together in the same family, were surrendered to a shelter together at 11 when their owner divorced, and then were adopted by me together. From day one, they were inseparable.

The First One Falls

Last spring, Coco started losing appetite and weight. When the test results came out, the vet’s expression was grave. “Kidney failure,” the vet said, “already in late stage. How much time is left? A few weeks, maybe a month or two at most.”

Loco’s Awareness

What broke my heart most was that Loco seemed to know Coco was sick. It would spend more time accompanying Coco, would sit quietly beside Coco when Coco was taking medication. Once, when Coco whimpered in pain, Loco immediately stood up, walked in front of me, pawed at my leg, then led me to Coco’s side.

The Final Farewell

The day Coco passed away, Loco stayed by her side the whole time. After Coco stopped breathing, Loco walked over to her, sniffed her, then gently pushed Coco with its nose. It pushed once, twice, three times—as if thinking, “Wake up, don’t sleep.” Finally, Loco took a step back and let out a long, low howl. That was the saddest sound I had ever heard.
